India lodged a strong protest with Pakistan over repeated ceasefire violations by the neigbouring country on Friday.
BSF and Pak Rangers held a key sector commander-level flag meeting to defuse tension along the Indo-Pak border due to these violations.
The DIG-Brigade commander level meeting was held between BSF and Pak Rangers at Octerio Border Out Post in Suchetgarh forward belt of R S Pura along the International Border and went on for nearly three hours, BSF officials said.
This was the third flag meeting to discuss ceasefire violations.
BSF troops had yesterday held commandant-level flag-meeting with Rangers along the International Border in Samba sector of Jammu and Kashmir impressing upon each other to respect ceasefire.
The commandant-level flag meeting was held at Zero-line between Ballard Post of India and Imran post of Pakistan.
On August 27, India and Pakistan had resumed the process of flag meeting by holding a commandant-level flag meeting at Nikowal Border Out Post along International Border in Pargwal sub-sector of Akhnoor sector.
There have been 24 ceasefire violations by Pakistan in the month of August. Two villagers have been killed and 17 others including 4 BSF jawans suffered injuries in the ceasefire violations.
IG, BSF Jammu Frontier, R K Sharma, said India made it clear at the meeting that "it is in the interest of the both the countries that ceasefire is maintained at the borders.
"We have told them if they fire in future, we will retaliate strongly", he said.
Barely seven hours after Wednesday's Commandant-level flag meeting to resume derailed talks and prepare ground for sector commander level flag meeting, Pakistani troops violated ceasefire again and resorted to firing on forward Border Out Posts (BoPs) and civilian areas along the International Border (IB) in Pargwal belt of Jammu's Akhnoor sector.
According to BSF, firing by Pakistani forces along International Border (IB) in the past 45 days was possibly the "heaviest" since the 1971 war.
There have been 95 ceasefire violations by Pakistan along the Line of Control and it also breached the ceasefire pact 25 times on the IB in recent months.
India had strongly protested with Pak Rangers at the DGMO- level hotline contact on August 26.
There had been 24 ceasefire violations in August alone, in which 2 villagers were killed and 17 others, including 4 BSF jawans, suffered injuries.
There had been 45 days of firing from across the border since July 17, during which there has been 34 ceasefire violations by Pakistan.
