In his first ‘Mann ki Baat’ for the year 2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation on a wide range of topics, starting with ‘women empowerment’. This was the 40th edition of PM’s radio programme since its inception in 2014.

Apart from talking about the achievements of women in various fields in the country, the PM also spoke about the importance of Padma Awards and Gandhi Jayanti. This year’s Padma Awards had a number of rare achievers from distant parts of the country, who were recognised for their distinctive work.

He began his address with a long letter by one Prakash Tripathi. In his letter, Tripathi wrote about Kalpana Chawla. PM Modi said that Chawla inspired women all over the world.

He spoke extensively about our ancient texts that exhorted the value of girl child. The PM said that, ‘in our ancient Sanskrit teachings, it is stated that having one girl child is equal to that of having 10 boys.’

‘Women are advancing in many fields, emerging as leaders. Today there are many sectors where our woman power is playing a pioneering role, establishing milestones,’ the PM said.

He mentioned how a few days ago, the Honourable President of India met women achievers, who distinguished themselves in various fields. Talking about a book especially compiled on the women achievers, the PM Modi said that ‘‘First Ladies,’ the book, can help the entire country know about the power of these women. This book is available on NaMo app.’

He cited examples of Matunga railway station in Mumbai, which is being completely run by women and women in Dantewada, Chhattisgarh who drive e-rickshaws to earn their livelihood.

Praising the unique endeavour to create awareness against the ills of dowry system in the society, PM Modi said, ‘I want to talk about something very unique in Bihar. A human chain was formed to spread awareness about evils of dowry and child marriage. So many people joined the chain. I want to congratulate Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and people of Bihar.’

From Bihar, he moved on to Maharashtra, where one Mangesh shared a touching photograph on the Narendra Modi mobile app. The photo showed an elderly person and a young child taking part in the movement to clean the Morna river. He lauded the drive and said, ‘Mission Clean Morna is a wonderful initiative.’

He further spoke about Padma awards, “I am sure you all felt proud after reading about the Padma Awards. We have honoured those who may not be seen in big cities but have done transformative work for society. On 30th January we observe the Punya Tithi of Bapu. Peace and non-violence is what Bapu taught us. His ideals are extremely relevant today.”
