Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has increased the salaries of Special Police Officers (SPOs) by 50 to 100 percent in an apparent bid to instill confidence and raise their morale. “The proposal of the State Government regarding the enhancement of monthly remuneration of the SPOs of J&K has been considered by this Ministry,” said a communication from MHA addressed to the J&K Chief Secretary BVR Subrahmanyam. Under the approved scheme, SPOs with less than 5 years of service will be paid Rs 6000, those who have completed five years will get Rs 9000 and those over 15 years of service will get double —  Rs 12000/month.

The new scales of remuneration will be implemented with immediate effect.  According to official of the State’s Home Department, the proposal sent by J&K government in this regard was cleared by the MHA within 48 hours.

“Around 30,000 SPOs presently working in the state will benefit by this substantial hike,” said the official. The hike came after several SPOs announced their resignations in light of 3 SPOs abduction and killing.
