The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are following in the footsteps of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), as far as dress code is concerned.

Though the IITs have introduced a dress code last year itself, the IIT Council website has put out a long list of 'non-wearables' for the upcoming JEE Advanced exam on May 21. The list looks much more stringent this time – like the one published by the CBSE for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) a few days earlier.

Last year, the organising committee had banned only a few items like writing pads, full sleeves, shoes and brooches etc. This time, as over 1.7 lakh candidates arrive at their exam centres, a whole lot of accessories will have to be kept out. Rings, chains, bangles, ear rings, modern watches, nose pins, chains/necklaces, pendants, badges, brooches, hair pins, hair bands, clothes with full sleeves or big buttons... you name it, they are all there.

To be fair, there's one relief. If the IITs banned all types of watches last year, this time they are permitted. But students don't enjoy a wide choice: only simple analogue watches are permitted. "This is to help them check the estimated time," says the JEE Advanced exam website.

The admit card this year also mentions veil in the list of 'prohibited' items.

The IITs introduced the dress code last year after cases of cheating came to light in the All India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT) in 2015.

Though the dress code looks exhaustive this time, students are not that convinced. "There is no mention of veil on the official website. There needs to be more clarity about the dress code – whether it is just a direction or a strict mandate and whether or not students would be asked to leave these items out" said an aspirant from the city.

Organising Committee members could not be reached despite repeated calls.

So, if any student wants to put his or her foot down on the new instructions, bear in mind: "only open footwear like chappals and sandals are allowed".
