Shashank Mishra, a third-year IIT-ISM Dhanbad dropout, found his 'Locate' mobile application a more promising opportunity than his college placements. Mishra left his BTech in Electronics and Communication studies a month back just to make this app. The app is for the safety and security of women. The six-month old app Locate has got 2,00,000 downloads in Google Playstore.

Mishra along with his friend Pramod Pandey, who is a computer science engineering graduate, initially made Locate. Pandey is the owner of Mobibit Softwares Pvt Ltd. Later, two more friends — former CNBC-TV-18 professional Alok Vani and researcher and writer Jitendra Rajaram — came forward and joined them. The team now has ten members.

Locate helps its users securely track their friends and family members and reach out for their help during emergencies by sending SOS messages through the application. The application also lets them trace paths on the map to their friends. Its a family safety platform designed for working women, parents and elderly people. Locate can also be used by transportation industries to increase productivity and cut costs. The best feature of this app is that you don't have to be a smartphone user to use this app.

When the woman is in danger, three of her confidants would get an SOS call automatically on tapping the power button of her phone five times. This action would send an SOS SMS with her exact location.

"This app works even when the application is not in active mode or offline. Users can create an SOS widget on their smartphone lock screen to activate SOS services on demand. Users have the option to choose who they wish to be tracked by, and family (or friends) can track each other and exchange their location on Google map," Pandey said.

Shashank Mishra, chief strategic officer of Locate, said: "Even people who do not have a smartphone can track the location of their loved ones. Such users can simply send an SMS with the text "WRU" to the people who have allowed the user to track their location on demand."
