The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested a junior official in Delhi’s Income Tax (I-T) Department and another individual for allegedly demanding a bribe from a private person in front of whom the duo posed as IT inspectors. What is interesting about the case is that the alleged criminal act took place right inside one of offices of the I-T department in the national Capital.

The junior I-T official, who used to perform clerical jobs at the Minto Road office of the department, has been identified as Vipin Kumar while his alleged accomplice is named Majid Khan.

According to a CBI official, the matter came to the probe agency when a private individual, a Delhi resident, requested for intervention. The complainant claimed that two individuals had come to his residence in the last week of January and after making brief inquiries about him said they were from the I-T department. The duo had also entered the house of the complainant by claiming that he was concealing old currency notes.

“It is alleged the two arrested individuals told the complainant that he was supposed to pay taxes on his property to the tune of Rs 10 lakh. Kumar then gave the complainant a number, and a few days later called him to the 15th floor of the IT office where he posed as a senior official while Khan acted as his assistant. After that Kumar directed Khan to take him to a canteen while he would talk to senior IT officials about the taxes the complainant owed the department,” said a CBI official.

According to the CBI official, on Vipin’s return, the duo demanded a bribe of Rs 2 lakh from the complainant.
