The hardline Hurriyat Conference said it would intensify efforts to mobilise public opinion against construction of a concrete road to 3,880-mt high holy cave shrine of Amarnath in south Kashmir.

"The latest Supreme Court directive to the Jammu and Kashmir government to pave the passage from Panchtarni to the Amarnath cave with pre-fabricated cement tiles vindicates our suspicion that a plan to build a concrete road to the shrine has been given practical shape," an amalgam spokesman said in a statement here.

On scientific terms, he said, "Hurriyat understands that this plan will have disastrous consequences as far as ecology, forest and water resources of the state are concerned".

The statement was issued after a meeting of amalgam's Majlis-e-Shoura (Advisory Board), chaired by hardline Hurriyat Conference chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani at his Hyderpora residence.
