In an unprecedented incident, a school at Howrah in West Bengal issued a fatwa against teachers’ dress code on Friday.
As many as eight teachers of the Shibpur Hindi Girls High School in Howrah, dressed in salwar kameez were not allowed to sign-in the register. They were asked to wait for long hours as their only fault was that they were not dressed in saree.
School authorities alleged that if teachers wear salwar kameez, school’s tradition will be lost.
“Teachers look decent in sarees. Our students of class 11 and 12 also wear saree as a part of their uniform. So, the school feels that the teachers should maintain this tradition of wearing saree,” said Subhra Roy, headmistress, Shibpur Hindi Girls High School.
However, the headmistress ruled out that the school has issued this fatwa. “This is not a fatwa. This is a rule, which we want the teachers to follow,” she added.
