Ram Gopal Varma, the director who has created more controversies on Twitter than with his films in the recent past, just did what could be the most politically incorrect thing to do: he trolled God.

Varma, on the first day of Ganpati, put up a series of posts on Twitter about Lord Ganesh. He wrote that Lord Ganesh could not save his own head from being severed, and therefore would not be likely to save others. He also posted, "Happy Ganpati to morons."

When the whole of Maharashtra is celebrating Ganeshvotsav, with chants of 'Ganpati Bappa Morya' in the lanes and bylanes of the state, Verma asked on Twitter what the people were celebrating for: the birth of Ganesha or the day Lord Shiva cut off his head?

He questioned the basis of the God status of Lord Ganesha, arguing that the only thing Ganesha did that his brother Kumara did not was getting the head severed from the body.

He wanted the devotees of Lord Ganesha to give a list of obstacles the Lord has removed for the followers. He asked, how could someone cut off a child's head just because he was protecting his mother's modesty.

The mythology says, that Lord Ganesha was standing at the door on His mother, Parvati's instructions, when she went for a bath. Parvati told Ganesha not to allow anyone inside. When Lord Siva came, Ganesha refused to allow Shiva inside, and Lord Shiva in his fury, severed Ganesha's head.

The same director has created one of the most memorable scenes of the Ganpati immersion, in what would arguably his best film, Satya. In the film, Satya's best friend and mentor Bhiku Mhatre is killed, Satya goes to kill the villain Bhau Thakurdas to avenge the death. The scene pans out during the immersion where Satya stabs Bhau several times.

Even as we publish this copy, Varma continues to tweet. He has tried to justify his tweets, by saying they come from both his ignorance and innocence about the matter.
