Maggi noodles has been at the centre of a controversy after Uttar Pradesh Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) tests found higher than stipulated levels of lead and Monosodium Glutamate(MSG) in it.

However, Nestle India claimed it got the samples tested in an external laboratory as well as in-house and that the product was found "safe to eat". 

The updates from Wednesday regarding the Maggi controversy are explained in brief below:

Delhi government bans Maggi for 15 days; demands existing stock to be taken back

The Delhi government today declared a ban on Nestle's Maggi noodles for 15 days. 

Delhi Health Minister Satyendra Jain said, "We are not fully satisfied with the submission given by Nestle officials today morning. Govt has imposed a ban on Maggi for 15 days. Company has been directed to remove their stock from market in Delhi. New stock to be brought in only after proper checking. As per prelim report the quantity of lead in Maggi was found to be more than the permissible limit, hence the ban."

Tests in Kerala find lead content in Maggi within allowed limit

While in Kerala, the state government had banned the sale of Maggi on Tuesday itself. But on Wednesday, test of samples from laboratory of the instant food in Kochi has shown that the lead content was below permissible limit. 

Samples of three varieties of Maggi noodles were tested at a laboratory in Kochi and the results showed the lead content was within permissible limit, Joint Commissioner, Food Safety, D Asharafudeen said.

However, test results of taste-enhancer monosodium glutamate in these products have not yet been received, the Joint Commissioner.

No lapse found in Maggi noodles samples in Chandigarh

Chandigarh Administration on Wednesday issued orders to collect more samples of Maggi noodles even though some samples were found as per food safety standards.

"As per laboratory report, no lapse was found in three samples of Maggi noodles collected from various parts of the city. The samples of Maggi noodles were found in conformity with the food safety standards," UT Chandigarh Food Safety Cell, Designated officer, Sukhwinder Singh said.

No MSG, lead found in Maggi samples in Goa

Samples were taken from the market and also from the North Goa-based Nestle factory

"The samples (of Maggi) which were drawn from state's markets did not have any ingredient which is harmful. The (results of) tests for monosodium glutamate (MSG) and lead (have) come negative. The samples were produced (for testing) in Goa and in Punjab facility," said Goa Food and Drug Administration's Deputy Director, Jyoti Sardesai.

Gujarat yet to decide the ban

Gujarat Food and Drug Control Administration had collected 39 samples on Tuesday. The Gujarat Government would decide whether to ban the sale of instant noodles Maggi after getting sample reports from laboratories on June 4.

Jharkhand to take a decision on sample testing tomorrow

Jharkhand Health Minister Ramchandra Chandravanshi today said his department would take a call on Maggi noodles issue tomorrow amid reports of several states sending samples of the noodles for testing.

Karnataka mulling lab tests of other noodle brands

Health Minister U T Khader said collected samples of Maggi had been sent to central government's Central Food Technological Research Institute in Mysuru and another private laboratory here but, CFTRI refused to receive the samples saying it was a legal matter. 

"Shockingly, CFTRI has refused to receive the samples stating it is a legal case, and hence we will give it to one more private laboratory located in Bengaluru," he said.

He also added that the state government is planning to lift samples of noodles of all companies from across the state for laboratory tests.

"Now it is only Maggi, but I am thinking of randomly lifting the samples of noodles manufactured by all other companies... for laboratory tests... I am discussing it also. For us, people's health is important, not companies," he said.

Tamil Nadu to wait for the results till weekend

Results of sample tests on Maggi to determine Monosodium Glutamate(MSG) and lead contents being conducted by the Tamil Nadu government are expected by the weekend and would be sent to the Centre.

"We have sent Maggi samples to test the levels of MSG and lead and the results are expected by this weekend. The next course of action will be based on the findings of the nature of results that we get and the action will be in tune with the law (Food Safety and Standards Act)," a Food Safety official said.

In Coimbatore, it was reported that a taxi driver found live larvae in Nestle's NAN PRO 3 milk powder.

The Drug Administration Department (food safety wing), tested the milk powder and the initial report by one of its food analysts found live larvae in the sample.

A health department official, on condition of anonymity said that they are awaiting a comprehensive report from the Government food safety laboratory.

Haryana, West Bengal, Assam and Maharashtra collect Maggi samples for testing

The Health Department officials in Haryana today started lifting samples of Maggi noodles randomly from across the state for laboratory testing amid row over alleged lapses in its food safety standards.

The West Bengal government has sent samples of Maggi noodles too for laboratory testing, state's Consumer Affairs Minister Sadhan Pandey on Wednesday said.

Assam government on Wednesday said it has sent 34 samples of 'Maggi' for testing in government laboratory.

"We have collected 34 samples from all the districts and sent them to government laboratory for testing. We cannot say anything now before the reports come in," Assam Principal Secretary (Health and Family Welfare) Sanjeeva Kumar said.

Even in Maharashtra has sent 15 samples from Nashik, Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur for testing.

An FDA official stated, "If lead content is positive in the samples that have been collected, the product will be ban the product with same batch numbers. FDA has the power to initiate against celebrities who have endorsed the product if the result is positive."

Avoid using Maggi for time being, says Jammu and Kashmir govt

Jammu and Kashmir government today advised people to desist for time being from consuming Maggi noodles and ordered tests on its samples collected from across the districts.

Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CAPD) Minister Choudhary Zulfkar Ali directed Directors of CAPD Kashmir and Jammu to randomly collect the samples of Maggi noodles from different districts and send them for laboratory testing, an official spokesman said.

Future Group and consumer cooperative Kendriya Bhandar take Maggi off their shelves

Retail chains led by Future Group and consumer cooperative society Kendriya Bhandar have stopped selling Maggi noodles across their stores in the wake of food safety issues, dealing a further blow to Nestle India.

The Future Group has 570 stores in 243 cities across different formats under brands such as Big Bazaar, Easy day, KB's and Nilgiris.

"In the interest of consumer sentiment and concerns, we have taken Maggi noodles off the shelves from all our stores for the time being. We will wait for more clarity from authorities to take any further course of action," a Future Group spokesperson said.

Likewise, consumer cooperative society Kendriya Bhandar is also withdrawing Maggi noodles from its 130 stores in and outside Delhi.

"We have issued circulars to all store managers to remove Maggi from the shelves since yesterday. The process is under implementation," Kendriya Bhandar Managing Director Jagdeesh Bhatia said. 

Amitabh Bachchan makes his stand clear on endorsing Maggi

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan, against whom a court has ordered registration of an FIR for endorsing Maggi, today said he will cooperate with "what the law says" though he hasn't received any notice in connection with the product that he "stopped promoting" two years ago.

"I have not received any notice. As soon as I get it, I will put it up to my lawyers and we will fully cooperate with what the law says. I would also like to add that I stopped endorsing Maggi two years ago. I don't endorse Maggi anymore now. That happened two years ago. So, I have not been associated with the product," Bachchan said.
