Haryana: 8 stranded persons airlifted from Yamuna river

The only means to save them was to press a helicopter into service as it was impossible to reach the affected persons in a boat.

Eight persons who got stranded at Mandhewal village along Yamuna river in Yamunanagar district, were on Thursday airlifted.

While stating this here, Haryana Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Capt Abhimanyu said that around 2 PM, the control room received information that some people have been stranded in flooded Yamuna river.
As the velocity of water in the river was very high, it was impossible to reach the affected persons in a boat. Therefore, the only means to save them was to press a helicopter into service.

Deputy Commissioner S S Phulia apprised the Chief Minister, Manohar Lal, Chief Secretary, DS Dhesi and Additional Chief Secretary, Revenue and Disaster Management, Keshni Anand Arora about the gravity of the situation and requested for a helicopter. He said the government responded in a positive manner and a helicopter MI-17 of the Air Force was requisitioned.

Seven persons, all residents of Kolliwala in Yamunanagar district and another resident of Uttar Pradesh were airlifted. Phulia said the state government is fully alert and situation is being monitored round-the-clock.
