Grenade explosion rocks Srinagar, 11 injured including 7 CRPF

Terror revisited Srinagar on Sunday when militants lobbed a powerful grenade at a busy market place at Palladium Chowk in Lal Chowk injuring 11 people including seven security force men and four civilians.

The incident occurred at 6.45 pm when the area was bustling with activities. Militants surfaced near Palladium Chowk and hurled a powerful grenade which exploded with a big bang causing injuries to 11 people including four policemen, three CRPF personnel and four civilians.

The injured civilians have been identified as Humaira, Abdul Qayoom, Taliba Gulshan and Shadab Shah. Police said the injured have been shifted to the hospitals where their condition is stated to be stable.

Shoppers throng Lal Chowk on Sunday as exclusive Sunday Market is established every weekend. The area remains busy with people from different areas visit the market place. Vendors were winding up their business of the day when there was a huge thud. 

“It was crowded and busy market place”, said Sanjay Sharma, CRPF spokesman

Panic gripped the area and people went helter-skelter for safety. Security forces immediately rushed to the spot and evacuated the injured to the hospitals. 

Soon after reinforcements were also rushed-in which cordoned off the area to track down the militants. However, militants managed to flee from the spot taking advantage of the darkness.

Police has registered a case in this regard and officers continue to work to establish the full circumstances of the incident. “If you (people) have any information that can assist police in its investigation, you may contact Police”, said a police spokesman.

The explosion came on the day when security forces achieved major success and neutralized a five-member gang of Hizbul Mujahideen and Lashkar-e-Tioba in a fierce encounter in the Kulgam district of South Kashmir.

The blast also occurred a day ahead of the 35th anniversary of Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) founder  Mohammad Maqbool Bhat.  Bhat was hanged and buried in Tihar jail on February 11, 1984. Joint Resistance Leadership of Separatists has called for Kashmir bandh on Monday.
