The state government is looking to strictly enforce the award of grants to sportspersons, including revoking them if athletes do not perform as expected.
To that end, the Maharashtra government has formed a five-member panel headed by the state's director of sports to look into the grants system.
The committee's terms of reference include recommending names for training and grants, a quarterly review of the selected sportspersons, and reconsidering the decision to continue grants if their performance is below par.
If the committee finds that a grant has been misused, it will ask the sportsperson to return the amount with interest. The committee will also identify deserving sportspersons for events such as the Olympics, Asian Games, World Championships, and Commonwealth Games,
The committee's members include Arjuna award winner Tejaswini Sawant, ace badminton player Pradip Gandhe, the Joint Sports Director, and the current Deputy Sports Director (Headquarters) will be its member secretary.
An officer from the department of sports told DNA: "A notification has been issued in this regard on October 7. Sportspersons from Maharashtra have tremendous potential and they can excel in international events with the help of government grant and training.''
Gandhe, who is member of the committee, said that the government's move will inspire eligible and deserving sportspersons from all disciplines. "I look forward to the first committee meeting where the scope of work, methodology will be shared. ''
Devindar Sunil Walmiki, a hockey player who was part of the Indian squad for the 2016 Summer Olympics, said, that the implementation of the committee's recommendations should be done without any delays and administrative hurdles.
