Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya announced on Wednesday that the Ministry of Shipping is planning to increase the number of seafarers to 5 lakhs in the next 5 years from its current strength.

With huge opportunities for job creation in the maritime sector, the Ministry of Shipping is planning to add 3 lakh members in the near future. Currently, there are 2.08 lakh employees working as seafarers in the country.

"In the world, we were contributing about 4% of the seafarer's manpower, which has increased to 10% by 2018. We were already the third-largest supplier of seafarer (cipher) in the world. We will take it to 5 lakh seafarers in the next five years," Mansukh Mandavia, the Minister of State for Shipping (Independent Charge), revealed.

This initiative was announced by Mandaviya when he launched the first Biometric Seafarer Identity Document (BSID) in New Delhi.

Speaking about BSID, he said the new technology will help to capture the biometric data of face and eye of sea seafarer. The centralized data of seafarers was very important, he added.

"Earlier this process required two fingers authentication. But from now on, the data can be detected immediately by scanning the face and eyes," he said.

Raising the issue of the low count of women members working as seafarers, Mandavia said, "We know that the number is small but it is gradually increasing. In the coming 5 years, there will be a higher women participation."

In order to promote coastal shipping, Mandavia said that the ministry's primary focus is to reduce costs.

He said, "We need to reduce logistics costs. We are at 14% cost, while the world is at a 9% cost."
