Tourism is a lifeline for several locals in Goa, but a lot is left wanting in the taxi services in the state.

Asking CM Manohar Parrikar to intervene, an NRI of Goan origin Mahesh Sardesai has filed a petition seeking the entry of Ola and Uber cab services in the state.

"Tourism is the backbone of Goa's economy and tourists across the world & India are used to services like Ola/Uber, it's time to allow them to operate in Goa. Besides, Goan taxi drivers never use the taxi meters required by law and charge exorbitant fares for their services," he said in his petition.

The appeal which has gone viral, has already been signed by more than 6,000 supporters.

Sardesai states that getting app-based taxi services in Goa will put an end to high-priced taxi services and unruly taxi drivers. It would also help boost employment and ease traffic congestion, he said.

According to a Hindustan Times report, the state government had earlier tried to implement meter system in taxis, but they failed due to the powerful taxi lobby.

A Russian travel operator was murdered in the state a few years back, after he fought with a local taxi owner.

Goa, known for its scenic beaches, is visited by over four million tourists annually.
