A 17-year-old girl was crushed to death by two eve-teasers after she spurned their advances in the upmarket Bagaat area of Srinagar city.

Romana Javaid, a class XII student of Bagh-e-Mehtab, was on her way to tuitions when she was followed by Shoaib Daryeel and Ubaid Ahmad Khan in a car. The duo gave her a chit on which they had scribbled their phone numbers. Romana tore the chit and threw it. Angered, the youths began circling Romana in their car. Unwittingly, they drove too close to the girl and in the process ran over her, killing her instantly.

Police have arrested the duo and cases of murder and eve-teasing under Sections 302 and 294 of the RPC have been registered against them. Syed Afad-ul-Mujtaba, senior superintendent of police (SSP), Srinagar, said: “The car belongs to Mohammad Ashraf Daryeel and at the time of the incident it was being driven by his son Shoaib Daryeel. We have seized the car.”

Initially, police thought it was a hit-and-run case, but investigations revealed that there was more to it than met the eye. The police pieced together the paper that was torn by the girl and traced the phone numbers of the accused. The two youths were picked up. Sustained interrogation revealed that they eve-teased the girl before crushing her under their car.

“My little daughter has been murdered and I want them to be punished,” Dr Javaid Shabnum, father of the deceased, said.

Conservative Jammu and Kashmir is witnessing a spurt in crimes against women. Around 2,521 cases of crimes against women were registered in 2007. According to official figures, 250 rapes and 950 molestation cases were registered in 2006.

“There is a need for tougher law, moral education and more parental responsibility,” Hafiza Muzaffar, secretary of J&K state commission of Women, said.
