This year, cut-offs for admissions to degree courses are likely to be higher than those of last year. The reason is that more students passed HSC in the state this year (87.94%) than last year. As a result, the race for admissions to good degree colleges will heat up in Mumbai.

The number of students from the city who scored distinction and first-class has also risen over that of the previous year by 2% and 3%, respectively. Looking statewide, too, the number of students who scored distinction has risen, though marginally.

At Pace Junior Science College, 250-odd of 1,400 students scored over 90%. At N M College, 97% of the 1,083 students scored distinction.

Adding to the glut of good candidates are the ISC and CBSE boards, which have a success rate of 98.8% and 91.6% respectively. As plenty of ISC and CBSE board students have scored over 90%, the competition to get admission to popular courses at top-rated arts, science and commerce colleges will be tougher this year.

“Though students in ISC and CBSE schools are fewer in comparison to those in HSC schools, they manage to take away almost all seats in top-rung city colleges,” said a teacher at St Xaviers College.

Even self-financed courses such as banking and insurance (BBI), banking and finance (BFA), BSc (IT), BSc (computer science) are expected to have higher cut offs this year, say college officials.

A larger-than-usual number of applicants is expected to try to get into the commerce stream, which has the largest share of seats in Mumbai colleges. That is because HSC (commerce) students have done exceptionally well in the city and the state this time.

In Maharashtra, the pass percentage of commerce students has risen by 6.2% to 87.8% from 81.6% last year. In Mumbai, the success rate has gone up by 6.7% in commerce. In the other streams, the pass percentage has risen by 3-4%.
