Union Minister for Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation Nitin Gadkari said on Wednesday that task to clean Ganga is a difficult one but there would definitely be improvement and visible results by March 2019. Gadkari though, was non-committal on putting out a definite deadline for completion of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's pet project Namami Gange.

"We are short on time and we are here only for five years. Our attempt would be to finish as much as we can. First of all I don't want to make any promise. We will try our level best and give maximum results till March (2019) end," Gadkari said. Gadkari was speaking at an agreement signing function of the first two sewage treatment plant (STP) projects that were awarded under the Hybrid Annuity Model-based public-private partnership model.

Gadkari also stressed that 'Nirmal Ganga', the component involving treatment of polluted water and cleaning of surface pollution in Ganga, was his ministry's biggest priority under the Namami Gange project. Under Uma Bharti's tenure Aviral Ganga, the component related to unfettered flow of the river, was accorded an equally high priority along with Nirmal Ganga. Gadkari said there was no shift in the government's priorities and Aviral Ganga, too, was important.

The water resources minister also laid out the timelines for execution of work under Namami Gange projects. He said that he has given instructions to the ministry's bureaucrats to finish the tendering process for STPs by December end and issue work orders by March 2018. "I don't ask secretaries for time, I only tell them my deadlines and ask them do or die. I have asked them to finish the tendering process for (STPs) projects by December. I won't tolerate any excuses, difficulties and so-called obstacles," Gadkari said.
