After FTII students called off their 139-day strike and decided to resume classes, chairman Gajendra Chauhan welcomed the students' decision.

"My appeal from day one has been that strike is never a solution. It is now over. I will try to end this protest through my work and positivity. We will work together. Life is full of challenges. I accept them... this is a challenge and I will do my best to shoulder this responsibility. My attempt will be to have good relations with the students," Chauhan, best known for his role of Yudhishthir in teleserial Mahabharata, told PTI.

Chauhan said he will soon form a governing council at the Pune-based institute.

"I am very happy for the students. I am happy that they have taken this decision. I am confident that in the future, we will form a governing council in FTII and start working there. I want to take everyone along, students and the governing body. It is not possible for one person to work, it is always a team work. Our governing council will work with everyone," he said.

"I again appeal to the FTII students to come and talk to me. We can resolve the issues. I welcome students' decision to resume attending classes," Chauhan said.

Commenting upon FTII students returning their national awards, Chauhan said, "It is not a good decision, they should reconsider it."

The agitating students on Wednesday called off their strike against the appointment of Gajendra Chauhan as the chairman of the institute. Although, they insisted that the protest will continue.

FTII Students Association (FSA) representative Vikas Urs said the students have taken a collective decision to go back to academics with "immediate effect" in the best interest of the fraternity.

Referring to FSA's talks with the Information and Broadcasting Ministry which could not end the stalemate, Urs said the ministry conveyed the impression that it had no mandate to take a decision in the matter.

"Now, it goes beyond the five appointments (of Chauhan and four FTII society members) which we had questioned. The right wing attitude is exposed and we know who is running the country," he said, apparently targeting BJP's ideological mentor RSS.

A series of talks between the agitating students and government's representatives, including one with Minister of State for I&B Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore in New Delhi on October 20, had failed to break the deadlock as the agitators refused to budge from their main demand for removal of Chauhan, while the Ministry rejected it outright.
