2005: The deluge

July 26: The day Mumbai stopped. And a few days later, DNA launched its very first edition, giving the city not only its platform to speak up but also a front that would clearly offer an assorted plate which, irrespective of age, would satiate the appetite of Mumbaikars for years to come.

2006: End of a leader

After fighting for life for over 10 days, this political leader — who carried the promise of reaching the pinnacle of his career faster than anyone could have thought of — breathed his last on May 3, leaving all and sundry in mourning. For his party, BJP, it was an irreparable loss.

2007: Big deal

Biggest-ever foreign takeover that established India as a new force in the fast-consolidating steel industry. Chairman Ratan Tata described the $13.1-billion deal as a defining moment for the company.

2008: The assault

One of the worst terrorist attacks on India. Pakistani terrorists began the onslaught on November 26 and continued the mayhem for three long days, killing 166 and leaving over 300 injured. Mumbai was jolted yet again.

2009: Fine tune

We had all swayed and danced to his tunes, and it was now the world's turn to do so. AR Rahman struck the right Oscar chord and brought home two of them — Original score and Original song — for Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire.

2010: Skyfall

The third deadliest aviation disaster in the country. Flying in from Dubai, the Air India Express overshot the runway, and caught fire. Only eight out of the 166 onboard lived to tell their tale. An inquiry into the incident said the pilot was 'disoriented' when he attempted to land the plane.

2011: Top of the world

A 28-year wait came to an end as the Men in Blue lifted the ICC Cricket World Cup by beating Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium. The night skies of Mumbai were lit up for the world to see. It was a perfect gift for batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar at the twilight of his career.

2012: The noose

Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab, the lone Pakistani terrorist captured during the 26/11 attacks, met his fate in Pune's Yerwada jail. Earlier, he was shifted to Pune from Mumbai after his mercy plea was rejected by the President.

2013: To the gallows

2001 Parliament attack accused, Afzal Guru, was executed in Delhi's Tihar jail. Guru was pronounced guilty and sentenced to death by the Supreme Court in 2003.

2014: The big wave

In a seismic political shift, the BJP-led NDA trounced the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty-led ruling combine. The most convincing electoral victory India had seen in 30-odd years. If BJP was the juggernaut, then Narendra Modi was the motivating force behind it. A new era in Parliamentary democracy dawned.

2015: Water world

The rains had virtually broken a 100-year-old record with one day's rainfall covering a month's average. The floods that hit Chennai in November and early December would cost India's economy an estimated `20,034 crore in losses, a report had said.

2016: Thin pieces

A bold step to demonetise Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency notes. The Centre claimed it would curtail the shadow economy and crack down on the use of illicit and counterfeit cash.

2017: Bringing it under one roof


It was a midnight call. Terming GST as 'Good and Simpler Tax', Prime Minister Narendra Modi also called it India's most sweeping reform. "It's an outcome of our collective efforts", he said, and added: "I congratulate all previous governments for their contribution, and for making GST possible." GST unifies 16 different central and state taxes such as excise, service tax and VAT, to create a uniform tax rate.
