'Friend' Omar Abdullah on Saturday literally rubbed salt into the wounds of Rahul Gandhi-led Congress when he declared that there was no leader with a pan India acceptability who could take on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP in 2019 general elections.

Omar, a former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir and a close friend of Rahul Gandhi, showered praises on the BJP and Modi for winning the elections, particularly in Uttar Pradesh.

"In a nutshell there is no leader today with a pan India acceptability who can take on Modi and the BJP in 2019… At this rate we might as well forget 2019 and start planning/hoping for 2024", tweeted Omar.

What added insult to injury was Omar's statement calling the UP result as "tsunami not a ripple in pond".

"How the hell did almost all the experts/analysts miss this wave in UP? It's a tsunami not a ripple in a small pond.... Criticising PM will only take us so far. The voter needs to know there is an option available to them that has a clear positive road map", he said.

Omar's statement comes at a time when the state has stepped into a poll mode after the Election Commission announced the by-election for Srinagar and Anantnag Lok Sabha seats. Both National Conference and Congress are holding separate meetings to chalk out strategy to take on the might of the ruling PDP.

Ally PDP and Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti too went into an overdrive to shower praises on the BJP and Modi for landslide victory.

"I congratulate Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his party on this resounding victory which is an endorsement of his Government's governance, developmental and economic agenda," Mehbooba said.
