Kanwar Pal Singh Gill, the imposing 1957-batch Indian Police Service officer of the Assam cadre, who brought peace to Punjab by eliminating Khalistani terrorism, was given a final adieu by people from various quarters here on Sunday.

Punjab Police presented a guard of honour as a mark of homage to the former DGP during his last rites. Gill, who passed away on Friday, was cremated at Delhi's Lodhi Garden crematorium. The last rites were performed with full police honours jointly by the CRPF, Delhi Police and Punjab Police.

DGP Suresh Arora led the Punjab Police in paying their respects to Gill. Bharat Inder Singh Chahal, adviser to the CM, represented Punjab government at the cremation. DG CRPF Rajeev Rai Bhatnagar and several former chiefs of intelligence and security agencies attended the cremation.

Known as the super cop and an able administrator, KPS Gill had twice served as the Director General of Police. Gill's sudden demise is attributed to cardiac arrest due to cardiac arrhythmia. The doctors said Gill suffered from end-stage kidney failure and major Ischemic Heart Disease. He already had Peritonitis and was recovering from it. He was admitted to Sri Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi.

Recalling his invaluable contribution to bringing peace back to Punjab, Chief Minister Capt Amarinder, in his condolence message, said Gill's role in restoring peace and stability to his state could not be undermined or forgotten.
