A former IIT-ian was found on a Washington footpath, selling paintings to eke out a living.

The 50-year-old IIT-Kharagpur graduate has been living in a small hotel of Bellevue since 2016, when she lost her passport and other documents. A group of Indians stumbled upon the software engineer, whose family members claim that they had no inkling of what was happening in her life.

The group of three youths met Jayshri Gill and after talking to her, put up a video and her photograph on Facebook, along with her details for those who can offer her a job. "We had met her when she was selling paintings. We found out that she was a software engineer and a 1991 alumni of IIT Kharagpur. She said she had lost all her IDs and only retained photocopies. That is the reason she doesn't have a job or a place to stay," said Prabhat Page, an Indian who works in Washington.

Gill used to have a regular job till 2014 but then things went haywire in her life. She used to share an apartment with few others but had to leave the place following harassment and a little over a year ago, was on her way to an interview in Seattle when she lost her bag which contained all her IDs. "She is not in a good shape and it is cold out here," said one of the youths.

In the video, Gill said she was a software engineer and had worked with companies such as HCL and Vigilant healthcare in Virginia. She used to live in Ballygunge and Alipore in Kolkata. She had been staying in the US for about 18 years and had been married and separated.

Asked about her family members, she said, "For sometime they are not answering so I am a bit worried."

Her family members said they had no idea what was going on. "We were not aware of how and where she was living. It is a complete shock. We spoke to her in September last year. We will definitely talk to her now and after that will try to get her back to Kolkata," said Gill's sister Maitrayee Talapatra who is a Central government employee.
