Chief Minister V Narayanasamy today paid homage at the statue of former Chief Minister and veteran congress leader Edouard Goubert on his 38th death anniversary today.

Congress legislators, delegates of freedom fighters association led by D Sivaraj and Congress functionaries were also among those present.

Goubert, popularly known as pappa (father) Goubert, was the first Chief Minister of Puducherry after the de jure merger of former French establishments with the Indian Union in 1962.

He was also the Mayor of Puducherry Municipality.

Proficient in French, Goubert was chiefly responsible for establishing JIPMER, a premier medical college in Central sector here in the post merger days.

He had a close rapport with the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
