Security forces are ready to intensify operations in North Kashmir after successfully eliminating terrorists in South Kashmir. The majority of the counter terror operations, that gunned down 122 terrorists this year, took place in South Kashmir, but the presence of nearly 120 terrorists in the North remains a matter of concern.

The Army, the state police, and the Central Reserve Police Force have been working in close coordination, acting upon specific inputs about location and movement of terrorists to pin them down.

"The movements and activities of terrorists in North Kashmir has not been significant, but a huge presence means they are a potential threat. Most of these are Pakistani terrorist," said an army source.

Sources said the intelligence agencies along with security forces have enhanced their surveillance to track the network of over ground workers who assist the terrorists.

"We don't want to be complacent and ignore terror activities in the North," the source added.

The number of slain terrorists is expected to peak this year, with the toll crossing 120 already. Last year the total number was 150.

Sources said counter terror operations will continue till winter sets in. "The number of kills this year could be significantly high," said an army source.

According to intelligence inputs Pakistani terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba has managed to flood the terror ranks in both South and North Kashmir.

Out of 258 terrorists recruited in the past one year, 139 belong to LeT, making it the most active terror outfit in Kashmir. This includes 39 locals — a new trend — as earlier, local recruits were more attracted towards Hizbul Mujahideen, a group that is primarily oriented to the cause of Kashmir, sources said.

The attack on Amarnath pilgrims, which resulted in seven deaths, was also planned by LeT cadres led by Abu Ismail. The Jammu and Kashmir state police have arrested three over ground workers who have revealed the terror conspiracy, police said.

Last week, the security forces killed LeT commander Abu Dujana who had infiltrated from Pakistan a few years ago.

After the Amarnath attack, a blueprint identifying active terrorists and overground workers were prepared. Sources said intelligence gathering to track their movements needs to be intensified to hunt them down.
