National Children's Science Congress (NCSC), which is annually held from December 27 to 31, will again feature students from Thane schools. Projects of five students have been selected for the national-level competition from Thane district.

This year, the competition will be held at Karnatka. The theme is 'Understanding Weather and Climate'. More than 2,700 projects from 33 districts were presented at the district level and among these 26 have been selected to represent Maharashtra at the national meet. And of the 26 projects, five have been selected from Thane district.

Jidnyasa Trust, the state coordinator for this activity since 2000, is this time too coordinating the event and guiding students. Projects from Euro School in Navi Mumbai, Dr Bedekar Vidya Mandir, Saraswati Vidyalaya, Shreerang Vidyalaya and Bhagawati Vidyalaya School in Thane have been selected for the final presentation.

The guides, teachers and parents have helped students in preparing for the projects on various topics who are ready with their presentation and experiments.

"Projects are briefly based on environmental issues that we have been facing for long hence. Students have picked up various topics like effect of acidification on aquatic eco-system, effect of using glass usage in architectural buildings in cities, study of carbon footprint due to mode of travel by school children, pollution created by vehicle and its effect on weather and effect of temperature and increase in carbon dioxide on the growth of plants," said a teacher from one of the shortlisted schools.

"In the detailed experiments, students have gone an extra mile and collected samples, facts and figures from various departments of Thane Municipal Corporation and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation," she added.

In fact, they have also suggested various recommendations like celebrating cycle day, no vehicle day and have dedicated lanes for cycles in the city to reduce pollution level.
Surendra Dighe, from Jindyasa Trust, said, "Students have been guided well for the project and they too have done a great work. They have managed studies, projects and other engagements in the school very well. We hope they would perform well on the national level as well."
