Five, including lady cop, arrested for 'raiding' spa in Powai

The Powai police have arrested a lady inspector, two constables, son of a police constable and a woman for alleged dacoity at a Powai-based spa on the pretext of a raid.

According to police sources, a police team comprising inspector Nagin Kale, with the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the city police, and the other four entered the spaon Wednesday.

"The spa staff said in their complaint that the police team first told them that they were conducting a raid as they have information about some illegal activities there. In order to settle the issue, they demanded Rs 2 lakh from the spa staff. When they refused to pay the money, the police team forcibly took Rs 10,000 in cash and two mobile phones from the spa," said an officer from the Powai police station, requesting anonymity.

The spa staff later lodged a complaint at the Powai police station on Thursday. After the police verification revealed that the allegations were true, a case under Sections 395 (dacoity), 452 (house trespass), 170 (impersonation) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code were registered against the five. The case registration number is 183/16.

Once the complaint was filed, Kale complained of uneasiness and got herself admitted to an Amboli-based hospital. Later she too was arrested.

"We have arrested all the five persons involved in the case.The policemen had no business carrying out such a raid. Moreover, it was alleged that they commited a criminal act," said a senior police officer.

January 2016 - Constables Dhananjay Gharale and Santosh Satane from the Matunga police station were arrested for allegedly extortion of an Ahmedabad-based businessman, who had bought a flat in Palm Beach Road. Same day, three Trombay cops and their accomplices were arrested for robbing an angadia of Rs 1 crore on December 19, 2015.

October 2015 – A constable from the Juhu Chandan Chowky unit of the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) was placed under suspension for allegedly staging the detention of two persons in July. The detentions were made when the duo was receiving Rs 49 lakh from a Uttar Pradesh-based builder. A police probe revealed that the constable had taken Rs 50,000 from the duo after the staged detention.

April 2015- Under the pretext of carrying out a raid, three policemen from the Sakinaka police station pick up a model and her male friend from a five-star hotel. In her complaint to the Mumbai police commissioner, the model alleged that the accused extorted Rs9 lakh from them, and one of the inspectors also raped her in a beat chowky.
