Five engineering students were killed on Tuesday morning after their car skidded off Mumbai-Pune expressway near entrance of the Kamshet tunnel close to Lonavla

The incident took place near Pawana Chowky at around 3:30 am when a speeding Maruti Suzuki Ciaz hit the divider and overturned.

According to Lokmat, the deceased youths were in the age group of 25-28. The report said that all the youths belong to Pune and they have been identified as Aditya Bhandarkar, Yash Shirali, Abhishek Roy, Akshay Bhilare and Jacky Samuel.

"Based on eyewitnesses’ statements, it seems the youths were driving the car rashly and overtaking in the wrong lane. The speed of the car was uncontrollable, due to which it was moving in reverse gear,” Mid-Day quoted Kamshet police as saying.

A sixth youth, who was travelling in the car and injured in the accident, has been admitted to Lokmanya Hospital in Nigdi and his condition is said to be critical.

A case has been registered at the Kamshet police station and dead bodies have been sent for postmortem.
