The fancy fire crackers from the pyrotechnic apparatus that were used to illuminate Sunday's Maharashtra Night event sparked the massive fire that gutted the entire stage.

A prima facie report by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) disaster management unit states that it was the pyrotech apparatus that first caught fire. It spread across the entire stage where Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders were kept.

"The stage was very close to the sea and the heavy winds did not help. One of the LPG cylinders on the stage blasted and fanned the fire," reads the BMC report.

The fire broke out while a Lavani dance performance was under way. More than100 VIPs and 25,000 people were at Girgaum Chowpatty.

Following the blaze, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis ordered a high-level probe. Fire brigade officials said that they would submit a detailed report on Tuesday. "We will submit a detailed report. Everything will be clear in that," Chief Fire Officer Prabhat Rahangdale said.

The statements of eight firemen at the site have been recorded. While the event was hosted by the Maharashtra government, permissions were sought by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Wizcraft International Entertainment Pvt Ltd, the event manager.

Fire officials said that notices would be sent to the organisers if any negligence was found on their part.

"We had asked the organisers to remove the inflammable material from the stage. We had written to them on Saturday and conveyed this to them. However, they did not pay heed," said a senior fire officer.
