Family members are still struggling to come to terms with the death of Lt Colonel Jagdish Prakash, 46, who was found hanging from the grill near the staircase of Salaria apartments in southwest Delhi’s Dwarka area on Friday morning. Prakash, who was from Kerala, was serving in the Corps of Engineers. He was posted at Kashmiri House, at Rajaji Marg.

Police officials investigating the case said that Prakash had latched the house door from outside and had left at around 5.45 am. He later hanged himself in the common area between the houses on the first floor and was found at 6.15 am. Officials added that Prakash was afraid of a court martial for his alleged involvement in a case of misappropriation of funds.

The matter first came to light when the police received a call from the officer’s family members reporting the incident. “The family said that Prakash used to leave the house early morning and then return after some time. On Friday morning, his wife did not find him around, but thought he would return. After not seeing him around for hours, she stepped out of her room, and found Prakash hanging from a grill on the staircase. She alerted her kids and neighbours who then called up the police,” said a senior police officer.

A police team reached the spot after which the body was brought down and was sent for a post-mortem. Primary investigations and questioning of the family members revealed that the colonel, who was posted in Siliguri some more than two years ago, was charged for misappropriation of funds. He was facing an enquiry and feared a court martial,” said a senior police officer.

DCP Surender Kumar also said that the deceased’s family members told police that he had been taking medicines and was under depression. “They said he used to get up from his sleep early in the morning and was facing health problems. The claims are being verified. He would even leave his residence at odd hours and would return after several hours,” the officer said.

Police further said that no suicide note was found from him. “His colleagues and family members are being questioned to know more. Prima facie it appears to be a suicide, however, since it has appeared that he was involved in some misappropriation of funds, all the possible angles are being looked at. His senior and contemporary officers have also been contacted for further details,” the officer added.

Prakash’s death is not the only tragic case featuring an army man.  Recently, an army jawan who featured in a viral video on the abuse of the ‘buddy’ system in military camps was found dead in an abandoned barrack in the Nashik district of Maharashtra.

Identified as Roy Mathew, the jawan, who also hailed from Kerala, was found hanging from the ceiling of a room in an abandoned barrack in the Deolali cantonment of Nashik.
