Amid high political drama over the alleged leak of Karnataka polling schedule, the Election Commission of India is said to have ordered a probe into the incident.

Here are 10 major updates from story:

Chief Election Commissioner OP Rawat has said that, ‘certain things may have leaked for which the Election Commission will take strictest possible action, both administratively and legally.’

The statement came hours after BJP’s IT cell chief Amit Malviya tweeted the polling schedule even before the poll panel’s press conference. When Rawat's attention was drawn towards the tweet, he described it as a "very serious issue" that would merit a probe and "stringent action".

The tweet sparked major row with all opposition parties slamming the ruling BJP.

The Congress dubbed the BJP "Super Election Commission", taking strong objection to its IT cell chief tweeting the date of the Karnataka Assembly election before the Election Commission had announced it.

Congress communications in-charge Randeep Surjewala also said the Election Commission's credibility was at test and asked if there would be any action against the ruling party and its chief Amit Shah.

"BJP becomes the ‘Super Election Commission' as they announce poll dates for Karnataka even before the EC. "Credibility of EC is on test.

"Will EC now issue notice to BJP President, Amit Shah & register an FIR against BJP IT Head for leaking EC's confidential information?" Surjewala said on Twitter.

The battle for Karnataka Assembly begins on May 12 when the state goes to poll in single phase. The votes will be counted on May 15, Chief Election Commissioner O P Rawat announced today.

The notification for the polls will be issued on April 17 and the last date for filing of nomination will be April 24, Rawat said at a press conference. April 27 will be the last date of withdrawal of candidates, he added.

All electronic voting machines will be linked to Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) machines, he said.
