Deputy Election Commissioner of ECI, Sandeep Saxena said a number of mobile applications (app) based on Android platforms have been developed which will help in maintaining law and order, streamlining functioning of presiding and polling officers and checking crime.
A mobile based monitoring system will be introduced by the Election Commission (EC) to keep vigil ahead of the Assembly elections in Punjab, scheduled for early next year.
Deputy Election Commissioner of ECI, Sandeep Saxena said a number of mobile applications (app) based on Android platforms have been developed which will help in maintaining law and order, streamlining functioning of presiding and polling officers and checking crime.
While, addressing a high level meeting of the civil, police officers and IT experts in Chandigarh, he said that these mobile apps have important features which will enable poll officials to feed real time information and data relating to polling. Even complaints received by ECI would be dealt with online, he said.
"The app will be visible only to ECI and officials designated by it. But sitting in their control room in Delhi, an officer can access any information for any police station in Punjab. The app will also provide contact numbers of police officers down the line," he added. The data gathered through the app would play an important role in vulnerability mapping and listing of sensitive polling stations.
The poll officials have been given specialised training to make them acquainted with the modern technology. There will be police station wise surveillance covering details of a list of proclaimed offenders, pending non-bailable warrants, number of arms licenses issued, and deposited, police deployment and sensitive areas. Once the model code of conduct comes into effect, police officials will have to upload information like liquor currency or liquor seized, he said.
Addressing the meeting Chief Electoral Officer Punjab, V.K.Singh said ECI would ensure effective monitoring and vigilance at all levels. He also directed all deputy commissioners, police officers and other officers put on election duty to ensure strict compliance to the EC's directives especially when the Model Code of Conduct is enforced.
