Eight women pilgrims were killed and three others injured allegedly when a speeding SUV hit them near Amra village here this afternoon, police said.

The women, belonging to Sena village, were on their way on foot for a holy dip in river Betwa in Orcha when they were hit by the SUV in the area under Moth police station, Superintendent of Police (Rural) Sudha Singh said.

Eight of them were killed on the spot and three others were rushed to hospital in a serious condition, the SP said, adding the driver of the SUV fled the scene leaving the vehicle behind.

A hunt has been launched to nab him, Singh added.

Those killed have been identified as Dati (60), Archana (33), Vinita (30), Shashi (42), Rashmi (30), Shakuntala (35) , Guddan (50) and Gayatri Yadav (40), the SP said.
