As Delhi witnesses a fourth wave of the COVID-19, Christians observed Good Friday services on April 2 with strict restrictions on gatherings. Good Friday is part of the Holy Week for Christians. The day comes two days before Easter Sunday when the resurrection of Jesus Christ is celebrated.

In view of the rising cases in the national capital, COVID-19 restrictions will be in place for Easter celebrations on Sunday (April 4) at the Sacred Heart Cathedral

The Sacred Heart Cathedral, one of the oldest churches in Delhi, normally draws thousands of people for its Easter week services. But this year, only 25-30 % worshippers will be allowed inside the Church. Last year, there was a complete lockdown during Good Friday and Eater.

“On Good Friday many people used to come, but this year due to COVID-19, the number of people were restricted. The number of people visiting the church has been restricted for Easter this year as well. The services will be held at 30 per cent capacity of the church. Senior citizens have been advised to avoid visiting the church,” Father Lawrence, Parish priest, Sacred Heart Cathedral told ANI.

“Following the guidelines of the government, those visiting the church have been asked to maintain social distancing and wear masks,” he said adding that online registration is also available for those who wished to attend the services.

When asked about the message for Easter this year, Father Lawrence said, “The message for Easter is that we should never get disappointed with any situation and trust in God and always hope for good.”

Devotees who took part in prayer and services for Good Friday on April 2 were also subjected to thermal screening at the entrance to the cathedral.

In the wake of the rising case of COVID-19, various state governments have put a ban on large and public gatherings.

On Friday, the national capital reported 3,594 fresh cases, the single highest daily cont this year, taking the total tally to 6,68,814. With 14 fatalities, the death toll touched 11,050 in Delhi.
