Earthquake of 5.8 magnitude hits northern India

An earthquake of 5.8 magnitude on the Richter Scale shook North India on Monday. The tremors that jolted Delhi NCR and neighbouring regions occurred at 10.33 pm and lasted for 25 to 30 seconds.

The earthquake was of 'moderate' intensity, stated the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) in its preliminary earthquake report on its website. It ran 33 km in depth.

The epicentre of the earthquake was reported to be in Uttarakhand's Rudraprayag, as per the National Seismic Bureau report.

Besides the capital region, strong tremors were felt in Dehradun, Mussoorie, Saharanpur, Noida, Ghaziabad, other parts of Uttar Pradesh and Punjab, among others.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was quick to respond and tweeted minutes later "Earthquake in Delhi. I pray for the safety of all."
