A Khap Panchayat in Haryana has set an example to be followed by others. The Panchayat of Kheda in Jind district has devised a new way to abolish casteism and assure social equality. It was decided in a meeting at Bhausla village that the villagers will use the name of their village instead of surnames to abolish casteism prevalent in the society.
The spokesperson of the Kheda Khap Panchayat, Udayveer Barsola said, “Not only in Haryana but in various parts of the country, there is a trend to write the names of the castes on the vehicles. There has been a rapid increase in this trend. Looking at this widening gap in our society, we took this decision.” The Kheda Khap Panchayat is known for taking such notable decisions.

Unlike other Khap Panchayats, this has an entirely different view on inter-caste marriages. “Our Khap does not condemn inter-caste marriages. This Khap will also ensure that there will be no injustice towards the those who choose to go for an inter-caste marriage,” said Khap Panchayat’s Head Satbeer Pahalwan Barsola.
“The old names will be as it is. However, henceforth no one will use surnames even in their official documents like Aadhaar Card, Voter ID etc,” said Barsola.
The Khera Khap Panchayat comprises of 24 villages. Residents of these villagers were excited and welcomed this decision whole-heartedly. “This was important for social equality,” said Bhul Devi, a woman residing in one of the villages. Similarly, IX grade girl-students Kusum and Vastu were very happy about the decision. “Everyone uses their surnames in schools but we are with the Khap’s decision. We will also use the name of our village instead of our surnames,” expressed the girls.
Spokesperson Barsola also said that after successful implementation of this decision in Khera Khap Panchayat, they will hold talks with other Khap Panchayats in Haryana as well as other states.
