The Chairman of Essel Group and ZEE reached the Symbiosis International University's Lavale campus, Pune this week. Dr Subhash Chandra addressed a group of students and discussed about leadership skills and various ways to improve them.
Initiating the discussion, Dr. Chandra asked the students about what exactly do they think the qualities of a leader should be? after pondering on their answers, Dr Chandra said that he personally thinks that, "the person who has conviction and can influence other people with his conviction, that person is called a true leader." Commenting on the same note, he further said that a leader is that person who admits his mistakes whenever he is wrong and appreciates his subordinates for correcting him.
A student from the group asked Dr. Chandra about his personal views on whether leadership can be taught. To which Dr. Chandra replied, "In my personal opinion, leadership can never be taught, talent can never be transferred, knowledge can be acquired, experience can be transferred but not talent. A leader should pull people along with him and not push them towards something."
Talking about true qualities of a good leader, Dr. Chandra further said, "Ability to inspire others to work towards a goal which a leaders set is a good leader. A leader should set a good example for other people. In any field, whether a teacher or a scientist, a leader has some qualities and talents which they are born with. A good leader should have a talent to judge people, he should have ethics. The leader must have empathy. He should be a stimulator, should be able to stimulate your thinking process, team player, persuasion and command. These are the kinds of talent a good leader should have."
