The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) has indicted ousted Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Director Alok Verma on three counts on Tuesday and served him chargesheets into those matters. Sources in the DoPT, the charges against Verma are serious in natures and he has been served chargesheets on three counts.

The DoPT has indicted Verma on stopping his junior Rakesh Asthana from mentioning Rakesh Saxena, the then IRCTC director, name as an accused in IRCTC scam. Verma has been accused of deliberately weakening the case against RJD leader Lalu Prasad Yadav in IRCTC scam.  DoPT was also probing role of Verma in removing the name of Ahluwalia Contracts as he was a close friend of the Ahluwalia family.

Verma has also been chargesheeted in Rajiv Singh case. It was alleged that IPS officer Rajiv Singh, a Joint Director with CBI, was a guarantor in one of the bank loans taken by his brother Sanjay Singh from the Allahabad Bank. And for availing the loan, Rajiv Singh had submitted false documents to the bank. It has been accused that Verma ignored this and did not take any action against him.

The former CBI Director has also been indicted for nepotism for allegedly favouring the induction of two officers – RP Upadhyay and Rajeev Krishna – against whom internal inquiries had reportedly revealed “adverse conduct” and “integrity issues” respectively. Upadhyay is currently Special Commissioner of Police and is in charge of law and order situation in Delhi. Rajeev Krishna is posted in Uttar Pradesh.

When there was a dispute between two officers within CBI, a high-powered committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi had shunted out Alok Verma in the second week of January. The top cop, who retired from the Indian Police Service on January 31, was made the director general of fire services, civil defence and home guards. He however defied the government order and did not join fire services.

The decision was taken after SC reinstated Verma with a rider that no policy decision would be taken by him. But it was short lived and within 48 hours he was removed from the post.Earlier, Verma and Asthana were removed from the agency in a midnight crackdown in October end.
