Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat, addressing a rally on Saturday at the Brigade Parade Ground said today that the Hindus of the country needed to unite to strengthen themselves. "On this occasion, we all should take a pledge of giving one-third of our time and one-third of our income to the Sangh for increasing our strength. Even our early leaders had said that we should not blame either the British or the Mughal for our downfall. United Hindu strength should be such that no one would look down upon them. It is our own fault because we ourselves are weak. Here in India are we free to carry out our activities such our pujas and immersion according to the religious rules? If not then why are you surprised that Hindus are oppressed in Bangladesh," he said during his address at the rally today.

He said that Hindus needed to be resolute in their mission of establishing a Hindu samaj and hinting at the Kolkata Police’s initial denial of permission to hold the rally, he said, "Hindu organisation is for their own protection and we are not against any community. Ganga reached Ganga Sagar despite all odds. Politicians will try to foil our motives. It is nothing new. It had been there since ancient times.”

The RSS had, after being denied permission to hold the rally had moved the Calcutta High Court and got the permission to hold the rally. The HC, however, said that there could be only 4000 swayamsevaks and guests including BJP leaders could be present at the rally today. There would not be unrestricted entry to all.

The RSS chief’s statements come just a month after communal disturbances which rocked Dhulagari, and area in Howrah district where a number of household units of Hindus and factories belonging to the other community were razed. “Hindus should shed their differences in caste and creed into the Bay of Bengal,” he said.

Swayamsevaks, in their traditional attire performed drills and sang their Sangh song before Bhagwat’s speech. Talking to media persons on the side lines of the event, state BJP president Dilip Ghosh referred to the recent murder of TMC leaders Srinivas Naidu and V Dharma and said that they might move court demanding a CBI probe as they did not trust the state police’s investigation into the matter. “It is not the first time that there has been a shootout there. It is the fourth incident since the time I had been elected as the MLA of Kharagpur. Now that the mafia don under their patronage has been killed they are stepping up on the investigation process. The SP, instead of probing into the matter is making press statements. We are keeping a close watch. If we don’t find it satisfactory we will move High Court demanding a CBI inquiry into it,” he said.
