The dog who died a hero's death!

Mansi, a four-year-old Labrador, and her Kashmiri master, Bashir Ahmed War, from the Territorial Army (TA), made India proud when they made the supreme sacrifice while gallantly fighting a group of heavily armed infiltrators in the high altitude area along the line of control (LoC) in Tangdhar sector on Saturday.

Mansi, a trekker dog, prevented a huge ingress of militants when it noticed some movement on the LoC and alerted his master Bashir Ahmad War. Sensing trouble, the infiltrators showered a volley of bullets at Mansi and Bashir, killing them on the spot.

"Bashir who was with the trekker dog volunteered to go with the search party to track down the militants. He was right ahead because the dog was running… The animal understands the mist and fog. During the ensuing gunfight, Bashir got two bullets on his face and neck and one on his leg….Mansi too was shot dead. We salute the two because they laid down their lives for the sake of the nation," Colonel Chander Bhan Singh, commanding officer of 160 Territorial Army battalion, told dna.

In fact, Bashir and Mansi proved the best buddies even in their death. Mansi has all along been attached with Bashir, and when he was shifted to the Tangdhar sector, the dog ,too, came along with him.

"He was treating Mansi like his son. Once Bashir came home and was about to have a meal, he suddenly realised that Mansi would be hungry and it would not accept food from anyone. He left home immediately to feed Mansi", Abdul Rasheed War, brother of slain Bashir, told dna.

Mansi has been the apple of the unit, given the prowess and successes it had in foiling infiltration bids this year. Mansi was part of the group that successfully foiled several infiltration bids along the LoC.

In fact, dogs are the unsung heroes in the war against terror in Kashmir. They have helped the army to eliminate many dreaded militants. They have been instrumental in saving hundreds of precious lives. Their bravery has won them battle honours, ranging from the chief of army staff commendation cards to general officer commanding commendation cards.

Dogs attached with different counter-insurgency units have varied responsibilities in Kashmir. For example, trekker dogs are meant for helping the troops in anti-insurgency operations, guard dogs are responsible for guarding garrisons during nights, and explosive detection and infantry patrol dogs help in bomb and IED detection.
