A senior journalist working with Daily News & Analysis (DNA) newspaper was attacked by few unknown persons at Kharghar in Navi Mumbai on Friday afternoon. While the scribe is currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital, the Navi Mumbai police have launched a massive probe into the matter.

According to the police, between 12.30 pm and 1 pm, DNA Correspondent Sudhir Suryawanshi and his friend Santosh Thatate were attacked by four to five assailants when they both had come to Kharghar for some private work of Thatate.

“The assailants had punctured the tyres of the Swift vehicle belonging to Thatate, in which both had come from Panvel. After the attack the assailants fled away from the spot on their motorcycles,” said Navi Mumbai Police Commissioner Hemant Nagrale.

“We will try to retrieve CCTV footage if there is any from the incident spot and FIR is being registered in the case,” said Nagrale, who visited the hospital and met Suryawanshi. The police registered an FIR after recording Suryawanshi's statement.

“Both Suryawanshi and Thatate stay in same housing society in Panvel and both of them have no clue about the assailants. They could not see faces of the attackers as they had tied handkerchiefs to their faces. Both of them suspect the attack could be about their society election matter which happened about a month back. Further investigation from all the angles is on,” said Nagrale.

Suryawanshi has a fracture in the right hand. Thatate has minor injuries on one hand. Both are under treatment and stable, Nagrale added.

Later in the day, the Mumbai Press Club released a statement condemning the attack on Suryawanshi. “Suryawanshi and his friend Santosh Thatate were intercepted on a road in Navi Mumbai and assaulted mercilessly. The 4-5 assailants had covered their faces,” the statement read.

The Press Club informed Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who issued directives to the police department to find the culprits. When MLC Anant Gadgil raised the issue in the Upper House of the state assembly, Minister of state for home Dr Ranjit Patil assured stern action.
