The absence of senior leaders Janardhan Dwivedi and Digvijaya Singh at Sunday's extended CWC has pointed at a possible rift in the Congress party. Both the leaders were dropped from the CWC, the party's highest decision-making body, when it was reconstituted on July 17 by party president Rahul Gandhi.

During the reconstitution, Gandhi dropped both the leaders among a host of others. Apart from Dwivedi and Singh, Kamal Nath, Sushilkumar Shinde, Mohan Prakash, Karan Singh, BK Hariprasad and CP Joshi were some of the prominent leaders who did not make it to the CWC.

Sunday's meeting was of an extended CWC, wherein apart from the 51 members of the reconstituted CWC, the party presidents in the states, frontal organisations as well as some invitees were slated to attend.

Digvijaya, who skipped the meeting, had told reporters after the reconstitution that he was 'happy' with the party president's decision.

After taking over the party as the president, Gandhi had dissolved the former CWC and made a steering committee of its members ahead of the party's plenary session to look after the party's organisational decisions before the reconstitution.
