Chandigarh, the City Beautiful, becomes North India’s 1st city to instal digital automatic speed gun cameras for traffic management.

Chandigarh police have installed high- tech speed cameras equipped with night vision technology to check vehicles driving above the permissible speed limit.

These cameras will help traffic police to record the speed of the oncoming traffic and issue chalan to anyone driving above the city speed limit. The digital cameras also have digital display installed with it to notify the speed and to caution the motorists of their speed. If the speed is above the permissible limit a chalan will be sent to the vehicle owner's residential address along with the image of over speeding.

UT administration has always been very particular for road safety and traffic management. Chandigarh is among the few cities that considers driving on high-beam inside the city limit as a punishable offence.

Chandigarh Police took to Facebook and posted about the new installations done on Jan Marg for trial basis. According to the UT traffic Police once the trial was successful, speed radar cameras would be installed in various parts of the city.

DSP (Traffic) Yashpal Sharma said two speed radar cameras had been installed on Jan Marg on a trial basis. “These are night vision cameras, which will also be helpful in checking over speeding at night when the violation is rampant,” the DSP said.

He said once the image of an over speeding vehicle was captured, a challan through a traffic violation information slip (TVIS) would be sent on the vehicle owner’s address. “The photograph of the vehicle will serve as an evidence in the court,” he said.

Currently, challans for over speeding are issued at nakas. Traffic police with the help of radar, sit on the roadside around 200 metres away from the spot where naka is laid. The traffic police then wireless the information about the over speeding vehicle to the cops at the naka who stop the vehicle and issue a chalan.
