The Deoria Shelter Home sex scandal on Monday rocked both of Houses of the Uttar Pradesh Legislature forcing the Speaker to adjourn the proceedings till Tuesday.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath charged the opposition with disrupting House proceedings for no reason. "Due to improvement into the law and order situation, investors were returning to the state after 15 years," he clarified when opposition charged his government on deteriorating law and order.

When the Samajwadi Party raised the Deoria Shelter Home sex scandal and sought a debate, the Chief Minister said that the government had taken prompt action to rescue girls, arrested and suspended those responsible.

"A three-member panel is probing the case and strict action will be initiated against those found guilty. The state government has already sought reports from district magistrates about shelter homes across state," he stated.

But this did not satisfy Samajwadi Party, BSP and the Congress. They demanded suspension of all other business in the House to hold discussion on Deoria Shelter Home. When the Speaker H.N. Dixit ruled to allow discussion during Zero Hours, opposition parties created pandemonium.

The Chief Minister tried to pacify agitated members saying that the Allahabad High Court was monitoring the investigations and the issue should not be raised by the opposition since the matter was sub judice.

When the Chief Minister held the previous Samajwadi Party government responsible for the Deoria Shelter Home sex scandal, infuriated members created noisy scenes and squatted in the well of the House and raised anti-government slogans.

"The Deoria Shelter Home sex scandal is a blot on Uttar Pradesh. Women and girls are not safe anymore in the state under the present regime. We wanted a discussion on such an important issue but the guilty government was shying away to hold debate," charged Ram Govind Chowdhary, the Leader of Opoosition in UP Assembly. Amid noise and din, the Speaker adjourned the House till Tuesday.

The Chief Minister said that a handful of legislators are holding the entire House hostage, disrupting proceedings to hold discussion on schemes related to public welfare.

On August 5, a 10-year-old girl had escaped from the Deoria Shelter Home and reached the police station to narrate their ordeal.

Acting on her tip off, the police had raided the shelter home and had rescued 23 girls from there. Later, a few girl had alleged that they were used as sex slaves in the shelter home by the owners.
