The SIT probing Deoria Shelter home sex scandal on Monday recovered a red-coloured car, which was used to take girls to Gorakhpur, Varanasi and other districts, where they were sexually abused.

The 10-year-old whistle-blower, who managed to escape from the shelter home on August 5, had told the police that red and white-coloured cars used to take shelter home girls in the evening and drop them back next day. Later, four other girls, who were sexually abused, had corroborated the statement of the girl.

The Deoria Police had conducted raids and had recovered 18 girls from the shelter home on August 5. They had narrated their tale of horror and sexual abuse at the behest of the owners. The police had arrested Girija Tripathi, her husband Mohan Tripathi, daughters Kanaklata and Kanchanlata, cook Mala and a clerk in this connection.

On Monday, the Special Investigation Team recovered the red-coloured car. The SIT Inspector BK Singh claimed that the car was owned by Girija Tripathi and her family. A forensic team from Lucknow is examining the recovered vehicle. The SIT has taken Girija, Mohan and their daughter Kanchanlata on remand for interrogation.

During the course of its investigation, the SIT found that three former Superintendent of Police (SPs) continued to sent as many as 121 girls to the shelter homes even after its license was cancelled in June last year.

Meanwhile, the Allahabad High Court has slammed the state government for delay in action against the guilty. The bench comprising Chief Justice DB Bhosale and Justice Yashwant Singh has directed the state government to send four girls, who were sexually abused, to a safer and secure place of the court’s choice.

The bench also directed the state government to ensure that identity of the recovered girls was not revealed till further orders. The bench directed the Principal Secretary Women and Child Welfare to submit an affidavit detailing action taken so far against the guilty.

The bench rapped the state government for inaction and failure to find out where these girls used to be taken and who were behind the running the sex scandal. It directed the government to submit a detailed report revealing names of those sexually exploiting shelter home girls and action taken against the guilty.

After the sex scandal surfaced, the Yogi Adityanath government had recommended probe by the CBI. Even after 15 days of its recommendation, the CBI is yet to take over the case from the SIT to begin the probe.
