284 citizens registered as ‘Police Mitra’, in a new inititative launched by the police
In a first the Delhi Police has roped in 49 women in a total of 284 people as part of their new initiative ‘Police Mitra’ launched on Saturday, under which they will involve members of civil society in every day policing.
How will one distinguish a ‘Police Mitra’ from the general public? In order to give them an identity, the police have distributed arm bands and ID cards to all those who have enrolled under it. The I-cards were distributed to the participants by the Delhi Police Commissioner Alok Kumar Verma at an even held in Dusshera Ground in Dwarka in Southwest Delhi.
“The ID cards would give them both a sense of responsibility and a sense of authority of dealing with the public. They will be responsible to remain vigilant about the activities taking place in their area. Most of the people who have volunteered for the service include ex-army men, students, advocates and housewives, among others,” said, a senior officer.
He added, all the enrolled members of the scheme had to pass through a rigorous verification process as per the detailed ‘Standing Order’ issued by Delhi Police.
“They all come from different walks of life and have expressed commitment to work with the police for making Delhi a safer place. They come from varied background of farmers, ex-servicemen, house wives, self employed individuals, Jhuggi dwellers, social workers, retired officials and students across all age-groups,” the officer said.
These citizens will be responsible in tying up with the beat staff in their area to look after the law and order, prevention of crime, traffic and crowd management, safety of women, and informing about suspected elements around.
“The scheme will help better communication with citizens as a whole and improve the daily policing in each area. I am gretful to citizens for taking on this additional responsibility,” said, Verma, while addressing the participants.
He said, Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a meeting with DG and IG’s of police last year had suggested to enroll citizens in all the police stations of the country for effective and citizen-friendly policing.
