Following SC’s direction that only ‘green crackers’ be burst and sold in the capital, the Delhi have arrested a Ghazipur resident for bursting crackers, after being tipped off by his neighbour.

However, officials are still pondering how check whether the crackers were ‘green or not’, reports Indian Express.

DCP (East) Pankaj Singh told the paper: “The accused, Damandeep, was bursting crackers outside his house when his neighbours made a call to Ghazipur police station. We sent an officer who seized the firecrackers. The accused was violating SC orders and bursting a year old crackers. The residue will be sent to FSL for examination,” said DCP (East) Pankaj Singh.

The complaint told cops that Damandeep’s children were bursting crackers outside and his house, before he was joined by their father.

A case under section 188 of the IPC has been registered at Ghazpur police station.  FSL officials are unsure and said there’s set standard to ascertain whether a cracker is ‘green’, and how it would be defined as green based on composition of permitted chemicals.

An FSL official said: “If Delhi Police gives us evidence, it will be sent to the chemistry division, which will study the residue. But before that, we will have to set a standard on what constitutes a ‘green cracker’ and the chemicals present in it.”

Earlier, in a bid to keep a check on the alarming pollution levels in the city ahead of the festive season, the police arrested one person on Saturday in possession of firecrackers and explosive items weighing 625 kilograms.

The accused, Ravinder, a resident of South Ganesh Nagar in Laxmi Nagar area, was arrested for stocking firecrackers and explosive items in his shop located in the Sadar Bazaar area of the national capital.

The raid was conducted under the directions of Delhi Police Head Constable Sandeep Chawla.

A first information report (FIR) was launched against the accused, along with a case filed under Section 286 of Indian Penal Code, 1860 and section 9B of The Explosives Act 1884.

The police have promised to continue further investigation into the matter in order to trace the source of the recovered firecrackers and explosive items.

Apart from the above seizure, 11.1 kg firecrackers have also been seized in Sabzi Mandi area and 7.9 kgs from Burari area.

The Supreme Court on October 23 had stated in its guidelines that only firecrackers with reduced emission (improved crackers) and green crackers and Safe Water and Air Sprinklers (SWAS) would be sold and manufactured.

The manufacture, sale, and use of joined crackers (series crackers or laris), the court said, were banned as they equally contribute to the air, noise and solid waste pollution. In addition, people would be allowed to burn crackers only within the stipulated time of 8 pm to 10 pm this year, it added.
