Janakpuri constituency: The seat will go for polls on February 8. Sitting Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Rajesh Rishi, who had won the seat for the party in the 2015 Delhi state assembly elections, will be contesting once again from the Janakpuri assembly seat this year.

Prior to 2015, Janakpuri used to be a traditional Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) bastion, having successfully elected Jagdish Mukhi (in all Delhi Legislative Assembly Elections from 1993 to 2013) for the saffron camp.

Like most other areas of West Delhi, Janapuri is a constituency with a significant presence of the Punjabi community. A fair number of Brahmins and Purvanchalis also populate the area.

In the 2013 Delhi state assembly elections for the first time, BJP's Jagdish Mukhi faced a close contest from AAP's Rajesh Rishi. Mukhi won by a mere 2,644 votes.

However, the contest paid off in the 2015 Delhi state assembly elections, when AAP's Rajesh Rishi defeated BJP's Jagdish Mukhi by a huge margin of over 25,000 votes, ending the latter's long reign in the Janakpuri assembly constituency. Congress' Suresh Kumar had only acquired a mere 4,699 votes that year.

This year, sitting AAP MLA Rajesh Rishi is contesting the Janakpuri assembly constituency once again. Against Rishi, the BJP has fielded its faith on Ashish Sood, as Jagdish Mukhi has gone on to become the Governor of Assam. Congress has pitched Radhika Khera. A close contest between the AAP and the BJP is expected.

The constituency of Janakpuri is a part of the South West Delhi district, stretching across areas like Sitapur, Jeevan Park, Mahavir Enclave and Chanakya Place, where several lower-income groups reside in unauthorised colonies. As such, the issue of unauthorised colonies is likely to be a major electoral factor in the Janakpuri assembly constituency.

This constituency has 1,74,133 prospective voters, out of which 93,093 are male and 81,032 are female, and 8 are transgenders.

In the Delhi Assembly Elections 2020, AAP will be contesting from all 70 seats for the assembly polls while BJP will be contesting on 67 seats, with its ally Janata Dal-United (JD-U) and Lok Janashakti Party (LJP) contesting on the remaining three seats.

On the other hand, Congress will fight on 66 seats and its ally Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) will fight on the remaining 4 seats.

Polling will be held at 13,750 polling stations. According to the poll body chief, total electors in the final electoral roll of the NCT of Delhi as on January 6, 2020, are 1,46,92,136.

The polls for all the seats will be held on February 8, 2020, and the results will be declared on February 11, 2020.

It is to be noted that in 2015, the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had a landmark victory after it secured 67 of the total 70 seats in the state legislature. The party is now eyeing a second consecutive term banking on freebies that it provided to Delhiites including free water, free electricity up to 200 units, free ride for women in DTC and cluster buses, among other measures.
