Dalit man attacked with axe, burnt to death for trying to enter temple in UP

In a shocking incident, a 90-year-old Dalit man was attacked with an axe and set on fire for attempting to enter a temple. The incident occured in Hamirpur in Uttar Pradesh. The man died of his injuries.

According to Hindustan Times the victim, identified as Chimma, had gone to the Maidani Baba temple with his wife, son Durjan and brother on Wednesday evening. As they approached the temple, they were stopped by a man named Sanjay Tiwari.

Tiwari attacked Chimma with an axe and set him on fire when the latter refuse to stop entering the temple. Earlier, the accused had warned several other Dalits against entering the temple but to no avail, reports HT.

The incident took place in the presence of several other devotees in Bilgaon, a village on the boundary between Hamirpur and Jalaun districts located 140km from Kanpur.

However, Tiwari was soon nabbed by the people and handed over to the police. Tiwari was allegedly drunk when he attacked Chimma.

Two aides of Tiwari have been named in the police FIR and are on the run, reports HT.
