Uttar Pradesh Police have detained a Homeguards constable, who is alleged to be the key conspirator behind the brutal mob attack in Dadri, in which Mohammad Akhlaq was beaten to death over suspicion of possessing beef at his residence.

According to reports, the homeguard has been identified as Vinay, a resident of Bisara who was posted at the Jarcha police station.

Reports suggest that Vinay who was in uniform at that time forced the temple priest to make the announcement about the Muslim family storing and consuming beef. Vinay was initially named as an eyewitness but police soon became suspicious when he tried to link Akhlaq with cow smugglers. Police is investigating the angle of personal feud which may had prompted Vinay to spread rumours.

Meanwhile, the family members of Mohammad Akhlaq met Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday. Yadav had earlier announced a compensation of Rs. 20 lakh to the kin of 50-year-old Akhlaq. The Chief Minister had also assured justice to the family of Akhlaq and said those responsible would be severely punished.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accused the Samajwadi Party of politicising the incident and said that it exposed the failure of the state administration.

"The Samajwadi Party and in particular Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and Azam Khan's response in this case had been one lacking sensitivity. They tried to politicise this from the word go. This is a clear case of failure of Uttar Pradesh administration, they are unable to really control the law and order situation in the state," BJP spokesperson GVL Narasimharao said.

"They must ensure that law and order is properly controlled and they must stop politicising incidents like the one that happened in Dadri," he added.
